How to Make Decorative Gourd Candles

Printer-friendly version

391 Creating gourd candles is a great way to add some festive holiday décor to your home and they also make wonderful gifts. They’re perfect hostess gifts for Thanksgiving dinners.

Materials:
Dried Gourds
Paraffin Wax
Pot or Double Boiler
Candle Wick
Pencil
Funnel

Begin by either cutting off the top of your gourd or poking a fairly large hole in the top. If the gourd doesn’t sit flat you’ll have to find a way to prop it up or a container to hold it.

Melt the wax in a pot or a double boiler over low heat. The double boiler is a safer way to melt the wax but an old pot over the stove on a low heat will work just as well. Choose paraffin wax that is colored and scented or buy colors and scents to add to your melted wax.

Carefully pour the wax into the gourd. Be careful since the wax is very hot and can burn. This is where using a funnel may be quite useful.

Then cut a length of candle wick that is longer than the height of the candle.  Wrap or tape one end of wick around the middle of a pencil and drop the other end into the candle, letting it touch the bottom. Prop the pencil up across the top of the gourd and let the candle dry and harden, then remove the pencil and your candle is done.
